AMIDA NEWS Print Post Approved P.P 100000326 May, 2016 AMIDA (Action for More Independence & Dignity in Accommodation) is a disability advocacy group that works on housing issues. This means we speak up for people with a disability or help them to speak up for themselves about problems they have with their housing. From the Vic Budget 2016/2017 “Getting Ready for the National Disability Insurance Scheme. The National Disability Insurance Scheme is the biggest social reform since Medicare. The Victorian Government is committed to the successful rollout of the Scheme for people with disability and their families. This funding will prepare for and facilitate the first stage of the rollout. This initiative provides funding to support the closure of Colanda Residential Services and will construct ten new dwellings and refurbish an existing property in Warrnambool. This initiative contributes to the Department of Health and Human Services’ Disability Services output.” From the ‘Herald Sun’ 27th April, 2016 “The Victorian Government has committed $61 million to roll out the first stage of the National Disability Insurance Scheme, which commences on July 1. Under the initial stages, Victoria’s last disability institution Colanda Residential Services will be shut, while almost $11 million will be spent upgrading properties for individuals and groups with disabilities.” 2 The AMIDA Committee for 2016: Chair - Peter Waters Assistant Chair - Norrie Blythman & Luke Stone Treasurer - Brenda Lacey Assistant Treasurer - James Teeken Secretary - Norrie Blythman Ordinary Member - Trudy Ryall, Simon Chong, Amanda Millear, Lincoln Humphries New AMIDA Committee members wanted Are you interested in becoming involved in AMIDA’s work? AMIDA was pleased to see the approach particularly, “The NDIA has explicitly limited the maximum number of residents to five. The Agency is of the view that, in line with current industry practice, larger models than this are not optimal for long term participant outcomes and limit opportunities for inclusion”. AMIDA is supportive of this approach, however, we need to ensure swift progress occurs to close all existing institutions. The other major feature of the position paper is the fact that housing and support provision are to be separately funded. “The separation of funding for the actual accommodation and…support is important because it gives participants choice and control over the supports they receive. An individual is not tied to receiving support from a specific provider just because of the place they choose to live”. 3 For more information on the Paper, please follow this link: http://www.ndis.gov.au/news/sda-news Banyule council has provided some information on the NDIS: http://www.banyule.vic.gov.au/Services/Diverse-Communities-and-Social-Inclusion/People-with-Disability May, 2016 The AMIDA office is usually open: Monday 9.30 - 5.00 Tuesday 9.30 – 5.00 Wednesday 9.30 - 5.00 4 Thursday 9.30 - 5.00 Please phone AMIDA for an appointment: 9650 2722 Email: amida@amida.org.au Web: www.amida.org.au AMIDA, 1st Floor, Ross House, 247 Flinders Lane Melbourne Vic 3000 Phone: 9650 2722 Inc.
